YC| In the volatile Middle East, full of autocrats and theocrats, Israel stands as the one actual democracy.
Yet despite this, the United Nations has been acted like an implacable enemy to Israel, levying condemnatory resolutions against Israel far more than against any other country in the area.
Given that, you may find it strange that Israel has been providing funds to the United Nations.
However, Israel may now be fighting back, hitting them in the pocketbook.
From Biz Pac Review:
Israel has announced plans to suspend an estimated $6 million in funding to the U.N.
The Times of Israel reported:
The cut to Israel’s $40 million annual contribution to the United Nations represented the portion of the UN budget allocated to four committees on Palestinian issues, the Israeli mission said.
Those committees include the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, the Division for Palestinian Rights, the Work of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories, and the Special Information Program on the Question of Palestine of the U.N. Department of Public Information.
“It is unreasonable for Israel to fund bodies that operate against us at the UN,” Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said in a statement.
Israel provided them funding and they used it to fund exactly the committees that were most fervently anti-Israel.
The cut is a good start.
But what would truly cut the legs out from under them and bring them to the table would be to cut all the funds, and have the United States also cut funding.
The U.S. is their single biggest funder.
Cutting funding to the United Nations is currently being contemplated by Congress and the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
